Stem Cell Q & A

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that haven’t yet developed into a particular type of cell, such as a bone cell or muscle cell. And yet, stem cells have the potential to develop (i.e., differentiate) into many different kinds of cells, depending on what your body needs.

Even as an adult you have tremendous numbers of stem cells in your fat and bone marrow. To create stem cell therapy, Dr. Petty withdraws a small amount of bone marrow from the back of your hip to create a bone-marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) that’s rich with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).

He places the donated marrow into a sterile centrifuge to spin away unneeded components and separate out the healing MSCs.

Although you have more than one type of stem cell, Dr. Petty concentrates on using MSCs because they have the potential to differentiate into a variety of cells. He can use your MSCs to repair and regrow tissues such as:

  • Skin
  • Muscle
  • Tendon
  • Ligament
  • Bone
  • Cartilage
  • Nerve

You can use stem cell therapy to repair acute and chronic injuries, alleviate pain, and provide relief from arthritis and other conditions.

How does stem cell therapy work?

Once Dr. Petty injects the BMAC into the site of your injury, the MSCs differentiate into the type of cells your body needs to repair your injury.

In addition, the presence of MSCs and the healing substances they contain — including growth factors — stimulate your current cells to regenerate and repair themselves, too.

The MSCs also promote the growth of vibrant new blood vessels, allowing for increased circulation to the injured area and accelerate healing.

Without surgery and with minimal intervention, your injuries begin to repair themselves. Dr. Petty uses stem cell therapy to accelerate healing in:

  • Fractures
  • Strains and sprains
  • Torn muscles
  • Joint damage

Stem cell therapy also quiets down an overactive immune response, subdues inflammation, and alleviates pain by building fresh, healthy nerve tissue.

Does stem cell therapy hurt?

Dr. Petty numbs your hip area before withdrawing bone marrow for the BMAC. You may feel a slight twinge and be sore for a couple of days after the donation.

He delivers most stem cell therapies with simple injections into the site of the injury. You shouldn’t have side effects other than some swelling and redness.

Within a couple of weeks, you should notice an improvement in your symptoms. Because stem cell therapy is healing and curative, your symptoms continue to improve over time as your body builds more healthy new tissue.
